English Summary & Reflection

My 'Good Movement' in Action

I’ve captured my daily walking and moving habits in a short video.

Today is a major traditional holiday (Chuseok). Having been quite busy running my business through the holiday season, it has been a while since I last shared a post. Writing after a long pause, I'd like to talk about a simple health habit that I continue to practice in my daily life.

I’ve previously mentioned the importance of walking mindfully—feeling and being aware of my body rather than just walking on autopilot. Looking back on my life as I turn 70, the ways I move my body for health have changed significantly with age.

1. In My Younger Years, I Built Strength Intensely

When I was young, I loved moving my body. I went hiking frequently and practiced calisthenics with deep mental focus. I remember doing hundreds of push-ups at a time, along with handstands and handstand walks—exercises that required considerable strength and balance. Back then, my main goal was building physical strength and muscle.

However, as I grew older and got caught up in career and business, my circumstances changed. It became harder to visit the gym or carve out dedicated workout hours, and over time, I naturally noticed a decline in my muscle mass and stamina compared to my youth. While intense exercise was right for my younger days, I now believe that maintaining consistent, 'Mindful Movement' suited to my body within daily life is far more important.

2. Health Is Not Built Overnight

A variety of factors influence health, including genetics, age, and living environments. Therefore, no single workout or habit can guarantee a lifetime of good health.

Still, life has taught me one vital truth: Healthy Aging is not achieved overnight; it accumulates over a long period of paying attention to and caring for one's own body. That is why, rather than waiting for special exercise sessions, I try to weave simple movements into my everyday routine—such as walking, raising my heels, and stretching gently in the morning.

3. Observing My Foot Alignment and Posture While Walking

Another habit I practice is consciously observing my feet and posture as I walk. When walking down the street, I often notice straight lines along the sidewalk or pavement. I use these lines to check which direction my feet are pointing.

Naturally, I sometimes notice others whose toes point outward or whose walking form looks unusual. Rather than judging them, I turn the question back to myself: "How am I walking right now?"

I don't force my feet to point perfectly straight, as everyone’s skeletal and joint conditions differ. Instead, I use the sidewalk lines as a reference to ensure my feet aren't flaring out too much and my body isn't leaning to one side, aiming for a comfortable and natural gait.

4. Counting Numbers to Focus on My Steps

I also have a habit of counting numbers while walking. As I've shared before, I sometimes count from 1 to 100 as I walk. The number 100 itself has no special meaning; rather, counting prevents me from drifting into random thoughts and brings my awareness back to the present act of walking. It naturally draws my attention to the sensation of the soles touching the ground, my body's motion, and the rhythm of my steps. For me, counting steps isn't about hitting an exercise quota—it's a daily ritual to feel and connect with my body.

5. Checking My Reflection in Store Windows

Whenever my reflection passes by a shop or building window while walking, I don't just walk past it—I take a quick look. I check if my shoulders are tilted, if my head is jutting too far forward, or if my back is overly rounded. If something looks off, I don't force a rigid posture; instead, I simply bring awareness back to my body and continue walking comfortably. Ultimately, observing my own body and posture matters far more than watching how others walk.

6. Turning 70: Valuing Consistency Over Exercise Volume

In my youth, I climbed mountains and did countless push-ups, but I no longer try to exercise the exact same way. My age and my body have changed. For me, health management is no longer about outworking others or boasting about past fitness achievements. It is about listening to my body, adapting my approach to match my age, and steadily continuing the movements I can manage today.

I check my feet against the sidewalk lines, feel my steps by counting numbers, and glance at my posture in window glass. They might look like small, insignificant actions, but I have kept these habits alive for a long time.

True health isn't created overnight; it builds through the small, everyday practices of self-care. Now at 70, rather than walking on autopilot, I choose to walk while fully feeling every step I take. Today, just like every other day, I walk forward step by step, gently tuning into my body.
